A Qualitative Case Study on the Change Process and Meaning of Interactions Between Mother and Child during the Theraplay of a Home-based Intervention: The Case of a Vietnamese Multicultural Family

The purpose of this study was to investigate the change process and meaning of interactions between a mother and child as a result of Mother-Child Theraplay, with a focus on home-based intervention within a Vietnamese multicultural family. In order to verify the effects of Mother-Child Theraplay during home-based intervention, the process of change and its meaning were qualitatively analyzed. The results of this study are that the mother’s parenting behavior and mother-child interactions underwent positive change. Eight topics were derived from the interaction change process, as follows; ‘Awkwardness’, ‘Rejection’, ‘Effort’, ‘Resistance’, ‘Trust’, ‘Acceptance’ and ‘Cooperation’. The implications thus derived, in turn were; ‘Comforting home’. ‘Searching for the lost Mother, myself’, ‘To move forward together’. Additionally, by analyzing the change process and its meaning, it was found that the performance of these within the home context was the most important factor. This study confirmed that Mother-Child Theraplay in home-based interventions is effective in changing the interaction between mother and child in a Vietnamese multicultural family. It is expected that this study can provide basic data for other home-based intervention programs aimed at enhancing the interactions within a multicultural family. It is meaningful in that it has led to positive changes in the mother-child interaction within multicultural families by helping to implement preventive home-based intervention programs.
